Identity Released for Man Killed in Rockville Apartment Fire

MCFRS: Cause of fire still under investigation.

UPDATED 4:30 p.m.—Michael Francis Mercurio, 52, was killed in an apartment fire Thursday morning in Rockville.

Mercurio was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service said in a news release Thursday.

Firefighters were sent to the 12200 block of Braxfield Court at around 12:30 a.m. Twenty-nine apartments were damaged in the blaze.

In total, the fire caused $40,000 in damage. Investigators have not said what caused the fire.

Initial tweets from Montgomey County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Asst. Chief Scott Graham that said the fatal fire happened in the 5200 block of Crossfield Ct.—an adjoining street in the same neighborhood—reflected information from a caller who was unsure of the exact address, an MCFRS spokeswoman said.

(Original) A fire in Rockville has left one male dead early Thursday, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service.

The fire happened in the 5200 block of Crossfield Ct. Twenty-nine apartments were damaged in the fire, displacing the people who lived there. Red Cross is helping those residents, according to MCFRS.

The victim has not been identified. WTOP reports that the male was found on the floor and died at the hospital.
