UPDATED 4:30 p.m.—Michael Francis Mercurio, 52, was killed in an apartment fire Thursday morning in Rockville.

Mercurio was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service said in a news release Thursday.

Firefighters were sent to the 12200 block of Braxfield Court at around 12:30 a.m. Twenty-nine apartments were damaged in the blaze.

In total, the fire caused $40,000 in damage. Investigators have not said what caused the fire.

Initial tweets from Montgomey County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Asst. Chief Scott Graham that said the fatal fire happened in the 5200 block of Crossfield Ct.—an adjoining street in the same neighborhood—reflected information from a caller who was unsure of the exact address, an MCFRS spokeswoman said.
