UPDATE: Driver in Beltway Hit and Run Faces DUI Charge

A man escaped serious injury by diving into car stopped along Inner Loop, a state police spokesman told The Washington Post.

Update, 9:35 p.m., July 11:

A man who allegedly was driving a car involved in a hit-and-run crash on the Inner Loop of the Beltway on Saturday night has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.

In addition to the DUI charge, Alexander Coreas of Silver Spring is also charged with negligent driving, hit-and-run, failure to control speed to avoid a collision and failure to stop at a stop sign, The Post reported.

Charles Adjei-Twum of Laurel, was behind his car, which was stopped on the shoulder, and dove into the back seat as the other car approached and struck Adjei-Twum's stopped vehicle, state police Cpl. Jason Langley told The Post. Adjei-Twum sustained minor injuries, according to the report.

A witness followed the striking vehicle as it left the scene and drove north on Interstate 270, exiting at Montrose Road. A Rockville City Police officer spotted the car near Wootton Parkway and arrested the hit-and-run driver.

Original post, 10:13 p.m., July 9:

One person is at the hospital and another is in custody after a hit-and-run incident on the Inner Loop of the Beltway on Saturday night ended in Rockville, authorities said.

Sometime around 8 p.m. a vehicle with Virginia tags struck a disabled vehicle that was on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 495 near River Road, according to state police Cpl. Jason Langley.

The striking vehicle continued north onto I-270, he said.

A witness followed the striking vehicle as it exited the interstate onto Montrose Road, turned onto Tower Oaks Boulevard and continued toward Wootton Parkway in Rockville.

A Rockville City Police officer spotted the vehicle and pulled it over, and the driver was taken into custody, Langley said.

As of 9:45 p.m., he had not been charged.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was taken to Suburban Hospital and is in stable condition, Langley said.

State police are continuing to investigate.
