PHOTOS: Bicyclist Struck on Nelson Street

Accident occurred near Woodley Gardens Park on Sunday morning.

Update, 1:30 p.m.:

A bicyclist received minor injuries and was cited for leaving a bicycle lane after being struck by a vehicle on Nelson Street near  on Sunday morning, city police said.

The bicyclist was traveling southbound on Nelson Street near Azalea Drive at 10:52 a.m., Rockville City Police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said in an email. The vehicle also was traveling southbound on Azalea when the bicyclist left the bicycle lane "and attempted to cross Nelson at a right angle, and in the process of this cross, was struck by the vehicle traveling southbound on Nelson," Treschuk wrote.

The bicyclist, who was found at fault and issued a citation for leaving the bicycle lane when it was unsafe to do so and without an appropriate signal, refused treatment for minor injuries, Treschuk wrote.

A witness said a bicyclist was struck by a minivan near on Sunday morning.

Rockville Patch reader Drew Powell forwarded the photos above and provided the following account:

At approx 11 AM this morning (Sunday, August 12th), a bicyclist was struck by a silver minivan on Nelson St near the intersection of Nelson and Azalea Dr.  There were at least 4 or 5 Rockville City Police cars, RVFD fire engine and ambulance at the scene.
