One Person Dead in Leisure World Fire

More than 75 firefighters responded to high-rise blaze Wednesday.

One person died in a fire at a Leisure World high-rise on Wednesday, Montgomery County police and Fire & Rescue Service confirmed.

Police and MCFRS said they were unable release the identity of the person killed, pending notification of the person’s relatives.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 15700 block of Interlachen Drive at 12:20 for reports of a fire and arrived to find flames spewing from the 9th floor, MCFRS spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt said.

The fire took about 20 minutes to extinguish. More than 75 firefighters were on the scene the height of the blaze, Nesselt said.

The cause and origin of the fire had not been determined.

Montgomery County police are investigating the death, said Cpl. Rebecca Innocenti, a police spokeswoman. 

Leisure World is a private, age-restricted community east of Georgia Avenue and South of Norbeck Road.
