New Details on Pedestrians Struck on Veirs Mill Road

Woman and grandson in stable condition on Tuesday, as was the driver of the car that struck them

Police on Tuesday provided more details of an incident in which a woman and a child were struck by a car on Veirs Mill Road in front to the Twinbrook Shopping Center on Monday night.

The woman, age 60, her grandson, age 6, and the driver of the car that struck them were all in stable condition on Tuesday, said Rockville police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk. The woman was at Washington Hospital Center. The child was at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

The 19-year-old driver, who remained on the scene was at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.

City police are taking the lead in the investigation, which was ongoing on Tuesday.

The driver was driving a Nissan eastbound on Veirs Mill Road in the center lane when it passed under a steady green light at Atlantic Avenue, Treschuk said.

"It doesn't appear that the driver was at fault at all," Treschuk said.

"It was 7 o'clock at night, people had dark clothing on and were not crossing in the crosswalk," he said.

A county fire and rescue service report on Monday erroneously said that the victims included a woman and her granddaughter.

A 27-year-old woman who was struck by a car around 6 p.m. on Monday night at Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Drive in Wheaton was in critical but stable condition on Tuesday, said county police spokesman Capt. John Starks.

The driver in that incident also remained at the scene, Starks said. An investigation is continuing.
