Update: Investigators: Lincoln Park Fire Caused by Bad Electrical Plug

A 10-year-old boy remains in critical condition.

Update, 11:30 a.m., Sept. 13:

County firefighters went door-to-door on Monday night to test smoke detectors and discuss fire safety with residents of the Lincoln Park neighborhood where a 10-year-old boy sustained critical, life-threatening injuries in a house fire on Monday morning.

The home, in the 200 block of Elizabeth Avenue, sustained an estimated $125,000 in damages, fire investigators said in a news release on Tuesday.

Investigators ruled the fire an accident. They said it originated in the electrical wiring connecting a clothes dryer to an electrical outlet in the kitchen where the dryer and clothes washer are located.

The fire was contained to the kitchen. More than 45 firefighters responded to the fire at 7:27 a.m. on Monday.

The unconscious boy was rescued under heavy smoke and fire and taken to a local specialty center where he remained in critical condition on Tuesday morning, according to the release.

WUSA 9 reported that a family of five lived in the home. The fire started when the father left the boy home alone for a short period of time to see the other children off to school, WUSA 9 reported Monday night.

Television news outlets identified the family and interviewed neighbors and relatives.

ABC 7 reported Monday night that the boy’s condition appeared to be improving. Fire officials said the home did not have a working smoke detector, ABC 7 reported.
