A retired receptionist with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has been charged with conducting a theft scheme, investigators announced in a news release Friday.
Joyce Saunders, 58, of Frederick County, MD has been charged with conducting a theft scheme of more than $500, according to Montgomery County District Court records accessed online.
She is accused of luring people who wanted to serve civil complaints and subpoenas through the sheriff’s office to her private business, where she charged them at least twice as much.
Lt. Col Bruce Sherman told The Gazette that Saunders would use fake information to convince people to hire her to provide the service at a higher cost.
Saunders charged 80 to $100 for the service, compared with the $40 charged by the sheriff’s office, the county sheriff office alleged in the news release.
The alleged scheme occurred between Jan. 27, 2009 and May 3, 2013, according to the court records.
A criminal summons was issued Friday.
