Loved Ones Mourn Navy Yard Victim From Derwood

John Roger Johnson, 73, was the oldest of the 13 slain in the Sept. 16 Navy Yard massacre. His funeral was Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg.

The funeral service for Navy Yard shooting victim John Roger Johnson was held Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg.

According to several news accounts, Johnson was remembered as a kind man known for his hugs.

Johnson, 73, of Derwood, was the oldest of the 13 killed in the Sept. 16 Navy Yard massacre. Authorities said suspected gunman Aaron Alexis was a federal contractor who had a history of mental illness. Alexis was killed in a shootout with police.

Johnson had four daughters, four step children and 10 grand children. He was eulogized by his son-in-law Toni Zagami and his grandson, Dino, The Gazette reports.

A mourner told WUSA9 that Johnson was the type of person who would have hugged Alexis, if given a chance.
