National Day of Prayer at Rockville Retirement Community

A Rockville retirement community is hosting a prayer gathering. It is open to the public, so please consider coming to this special event.

Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) is opening its doors to people of all faiths  on National Prayer Day, Thursday, May 2, 2013. The public is invited to an interfaith prayer service which will feature “prayers for the earth and the peoples of the earth.”

The hour-long service begins at 1:00pm in the IKF multipurpose room. Prayers will be led by local religious leaders, as well as members of the IKF community, including residents and staff. Musical prayers from several faith traditions will be included featuring Tabla drum prayers (Hindu) and Shakuhachi and Nay flute prayers (Buddhist and Sufi traditions).

Richard Thayer, Chaplain for Ingleside at King Farm, will be starting and finishing the service. He explains, "Although we represent many different traditions, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Baha'i, we meet on this special day on the common ground of a common practice--prayer. We will use this occasion to celebrate the variety of religious traditions, together. For those looking to gather with a community to pray, Ingleside at King Farm is the place."

The continuing care retirement community plans to make this an annual tradition.

Four residents of Ingleside at King Farm will lead prayers during the service from their respective faith traditions: Rev. Dr. Jim Macdonnell, Presbyterian, Rev. Dr. Sharon Ringe, United Church of Christ and Rev. Frank Senger, Lutheran. And, Joan Harrison, who married into the Osage Tribe will offer a Native American Prayer.

Two IKF Staff members will offer prayers, Mr. Ibraheem Muhammad, has penned an Islamic prayer for the event, and Ms. Rohini Dahl, will say a Hindu Prayer.

Other prayers will be offered by, Father Agustin Lopez, St. Raphael's Catholic Church, and Ms. Penny Trusty, Rockville Bahai Community, and Rabbi Arnold Saltzman, of the Hevrat Shalom congregation (which meets at Ingleside at King Farm).

The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, enacted by the United States Congress in 1952.  Every U.S. president since has signed a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. The idea of such a day was conceived by George Washington, the first president of the United States.
