The 20-minute Rule of Thumb and Keeping Kids Healthy in Hot Weather

With temperatures climbing, keep kids healthy with the 20-minute rule-of-thumb for hot weather.

With temperatures in the 90s and such high humidity this week, it's so important to make sure your kids are kept cool and healthy. Children are more vulnerable to heat illness than adults because they produce more heat, don't sweat as much and are less aware of the risks of heat illness.

We all know how fast time flies when kids are playing outside and enjoying summer activities and sports with their friends. But before they run out the door, give them a bottle of water or a sports beverage and remind them to drink half about every 20 minutes. This is a good rule-of-thumb that will help keep them hydrated and regulate their body temperature.

In this video, my friend Dr. Scott Freedman, medical director of the pediatric department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, touches on some of the most important symptoms and treatments for heat exhaustion and heat stroke in young children. Check it out and then take the quiz on our Facebook page.
