DC vs. Montgomery County: Stevie Wonder had it right--"skyscrapers and everything"

Why would young people rather live in DC than in Montgomery County? Because DC is a real city, with alleys, entertaining homeless people, gentrification and Ben's Chili Bowl.

A new trend in Montgomery County is to obsess over why young people live in DC and not in the County. Some County elected officials, and those who plan stuff for a living in the County, seem especially concerned and obsessed about this.  For some background here are a few links:

I thought I’d offer 10 reasons why I think young people pick DC over the County.  So, here goes my feeble stab at pretending to be David Letterman.  (Note to readers:  DC is my hometown and I feel as though I can take a little license to offend here.)

10.       Streets have alleys

9.         Ben’s Chili Bowl

8.         CityPaper

7.         Entertaining homeless panhandlers

6.         Politicians go to jail (will any County politician go jail over the Silver Spring Transit fiasco?)

5.         Housing projects and ghettoes

4.         Gentrification

3.         Sidewalks with destinations (it is always about going somewhere)

2.         Funky vibe (it just feels good chilling in Chez Billy’s on a Saturday night)
