With 12 online votes in 12 days, animal lovers and their friends can help the Montgomery County Humane Society qualify to compete in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.
The 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters and their communities, aimed at getting a much larger number of animals adopted or returned to their owners than last year. The first phase is the qualifying heat from April 5-April 16, when registered shelters vie for the most online votes from their supporters. The 50 shelters with the most votes will be the official contestants for the 2012 Challenge.
By entering the Challenge, MCHS aims to save more lives and get rewarded for it. Each of the 50 selected shelters will strive to save at least 300 more dogs and cats during August, September and October of this year than during the same period in 2011.
This year MCHS is only shelter in the DC region competing. To become one of the 50, the Humane Society is reaching out to the entire community – everyone who wants to help more animals – to vote every day. Last year’s overall winner garnered 30,000 votes.
Here’s what to do to support MCHS during the qualifying heat of the Challenge: Starting April 5 and running through April 16, visit www.votetosavelives.org every day and vote for MCHS. Supporters are also encouraged to send this link to colleagues, friends, family, and social networks and ask them to vote too; they may vote for MCHS from anywhere in the U.S.

Neville loses an eye, gains a new home
MCHS helps abandoned, abused and animals in need every day. Neville, for one, was a cat from a hoarder who had thought he was helping homeless cats by taking in all he could. The man’s home became crowded and messy, and Animal Control required him to give them all up. As a result of a severe upper respiratory infection, he developed an infection in one eye that ultimately required it to be removed, but he remained affectionate and loving. With the efforts of the MCHS adoption staff, he found a loving new home where he now darts playfully around the living room and cuddles up to watch TV.
