Family Activities at Lockhouse 25

Join C&O Canal staff and volunteers on August 10th as Lockhouse 25 (Edwards Ferry) is opened to the public for family exploration and activities from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. As part of the new C&O Canal Civic Engagement program, families will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on programs that will allow them to explore and learn about life on the C&O Canal in the 19th century and its unique place in the story of the struggle for freedom and equality in our nation. Activities will include:

Mule Soup: Have you ever wondered what makes a mule a mule? Learn the science behind mules and why they are the perfect animal to work on the C&O Canal! (Appropriate for all, designed specifically for school-aged students, K-6)
Lockhouse Life: What was it like to be the child of a lockkeeper? How would your life have been different from that of other people your age? Learn about the day-to-day life of the average child living in a C&O Canal lockhouse before the Civil War and the lives of others they may have encountered in their time… (Appropriate for all ages, designed specifically for school-aged students, K-6)

Underground Railroad: What was the Underground Railroad and how did it connect to the C&O Canal? Learn about this pathway to freedom, the people who used it and how they knew where to go. (Appropriate for all ages, designed specifically for school-aged students, K-6)

Join the Signal Corps!: How did people communicate over long distances before telephones and computers? Learn how soldiers communicated using signal flags during the Civil War and why Edwards Ferry was an important place in the fight for freedom! (Appropriate for all ages, designed specifically for school aged students, K-6)
