VisArts offers to the public an artist talk and presentation by Afghani artist Rahraw Omarzad on Friday, November 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mr. Omarzad is the Founding Director of the Center for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan, the Women’s Artistic Center, Professor of Fine Art at Kabul University, as well as founder and editor of Gahnama-e-Hunar, an Afghan art magazine. He has participated in exhibitions at dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany (2012), the Asia Society, New York (2009), and Tate Britain, London (2008), and curated numerous exhibitions of young artists.


 


Omarzad's creative goal is to explore the role of contemporary art as a tool for empowerment, open society and gender equity. He is committed to exploring the extent that art can profoundly affect thinking and action. Mr. Omarzad will present an overview of the short history of contemporary art in Afghanistan and the role of women in Afghan contemporary art. As the director of the Center for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan (CCAA) and the Women’s Artistic Center, he will address the importance of an art center focused on contemporary art as a tool for empowerment and the challenges that Afghan artists face.
