Harford County Executive David Craig, Del. Ron George and Charles Lollar are all vying for the Republican nomination.

Gilchrest, a moderate who often broke with his party over environmental issues, was defeated in the 2008 Republican primary by Rep. Andy Harris. In the general election Gilchrest backed Democrat Frank Kratovil who won the seat. But Kratovil was defeated two years later by Harris.
