Franchot Files For Re-Election For Comptroller

The Democrat incumbent cites his record as an "independent fiscal watchdog" as he seeks a third term as the state's chief tax collector.

Comptroller Peter Franchot Thursday announced that he has formally filed for a third term as the state's chief tax collector.

In a video and an email announcement to supporter, Franchot cited his record as an "independent fiscal watchdog."

"Under my leadership, the comptroller's office has made it easier than ever for honest Marylanders to file their taxes and pay their bills electronically," Franchot said.

But over the past eight years Franchot has also used the position and its seat on the state Board of Public Works as a bully pulpit to argue against increased taxes, advocate for air conditioning in schools in Baltimore County and to protest the proposed elimination of the men's soccer and baseball programs at Towson University.
