Some Parts of Rockville Face Water Restrictions

Washington Suburban Sanitary customers are affected.

Rockville residents who receive their water from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission are facing mandatory water restrictions for up to a week as a result of a water main break in Chevy Chase. But residents served by the city’s system are unaffected, city officials announced Tuesday.

The WSSC issued the mandatory water restrictions for all of its customers after a break occurred in a 54-inch water main in Chevy Chase. On Monday night, the gushing water spewed three stories high, closing Connecticut Avenue overnight.

The restrictions limit water use in showers, washing clothes and for other routine purposes.

Rockville city spokeswoman Jenny Kimball said that while the city system was not affected by the water main break, many Rockville residents receive water from WSSC. Those communities include: King Farm, College Garden, Plymouth Woods, as well as portions of Twinbrook, Potomac Woods, Chadsberry, Montrose and Woodley Gardens.

Aside from looking at a monthly water bill, residents can go to the city's GIS mapping service,  www.rockvillemd.gov/gis, click on "General Purpose Map" and enter their address into the system to see information, including whether Rockville is the water service provider.

Residents can also view a map of the city’s water and sewer boundaries at www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/waterservice.

What are the restrictions?

WSSC water restrictions may be imposed for up to a week and include:

  • Use water only as necessary—shorter showers and turning off faucets after washing hands and while brushing teeth
  • Limit flushing toilets (do not flush after every use)
  • Put off washing clothes if possible
  • Limit the use of dishwashers and wash only full loads
