Top Headlines: Local Olympian Takes Gold, Teenage Sex Trafficking, Bait Cars and More

Catch up on top Montgomery County headlines this week, including an Olympic win, a man charged with teenage sex trafficking and a new way to catch thieves in Gaithersburg.

 

BETHESDA—Friends, teachers, classmates and supporters of Olympian Katie Ledecky gathered at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart Friday to watch as the 15-year-old swam her way to the gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle. Ledecky, a rising sophomore at Stone Ridge, is the youngest member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. 

TAKOMA PARK—A Montgomery County man has been charged with working a teenage girl as a prostitute in Maryland and Northern Virginia, according to U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride of the Eastern District of Virginia. .

GAITHERSBURG—The city of Gaithersburg has a new tool to catch car burglars in the act. The city announced Tuesday the launch of its "Anti-Theft Vehicle" program, featuring a vehicle operated by the police and containing valuable items to the draw attention of thieves. .

ROCKVILLE — A local performance troupe is making headlines in Germany as it travels and performs in Rockville’s sister city of Pinneberg and in the German capital. 

WHEATON—Supporters of the DREAM Act to help educate illegal immigrants will be marching from downtown Silver Spring to downtown Wheaton on Aug. 5 to raise awareness and educate voters before the November referendum.

POTOMAC—Winston Churchill High School in Potomac is one of three county high schools to expand classroom autism resources this year. Students on the autism spectrum enrolled in the schools will mix specialist-assisted time in regular classes with personal classroom instruction. 

CHEVY CHASE—Politics and Prose—the venerable Chevy Chase, DC, bookstore—was caught in a controversy in the blogosphere this week over a scholar and author's criticism that the store censored the playing of Go-Go music. The store denies the allegation.

Twinbrook Swimming Pool (TSP) can hold three public open house days to introduce the pool toRead More perspective members. This year the dates are June 8, July 13 and August 10. The cost is $5 per person. The TSP has a big insurance policy to cover swimmers. Not sure free is appropriate. As a private membership pool, there are regulations that must be followed.

If you swim on the 3 open public swim days at the Twinbrook Swimming Pool, you can consider it aRead More trial. Liability insurance does cost money. Entrance of $5 is a real bargain. Members pay to maintain the pool.

It sounds like your daughter and god daughter don't have their own phones? No matter my children's age, I make it a point to know the running times of the movies they're at, especially if I am the one who is going to be picking them up. We warn children--especially girls and young women--not to go to strangers for help. We know that of the three girls, the man kidnapped one who was his daughter's friend after giving her a lift.
