The Council On Recess, Options for Your Fun Quest and Details on the Twilight Runfest

It's the 'ring around the Beltway' edition of 'The Rundown.'

Good Monday, Rockville.

With schools out and the July 4 holiday quickly approaching it looks like things have slowed down a bit around town.

At least the roads seem to be a bit less traffic-clogged than usual. And vacation from traffic is the best kind of summer vacation there is.

For those of us not out-of-town on vacation this week, let’s get into some of what you need to know with this “need-to-know basis” edition of “The Rundown”:

  • If you show up at for a City Council meeting tonight, you’ll be lonely. The mayor and council are on recess until July 11.
  • Many media bloggers and online publications have weighed in on Rockville Central’s switch, in March, to a Facebook-only format. On Sunday, it was The Washington Post’s turn.
A story about the switch appeared on the front page of the Washington Post’s business section yesterday. .
  • Davey Johnson takes over as manager of the Washington Nationals tonight in Los Angeles. As a final(?) postmortem on former as Nats skipper we offer this from cbswashingtondc.com (with thanks for the “refer” from Patch contributor Marty Chase): Riggleman was on “The Sports Junkies” and on “The Mike Wise Show with Holden Kushner” on 106.7 FM The Fan on Friday and talked about his reasons for resigning and about his Thursday night out “solving the world’s problems” at in Bethesda.
  • A few Rockville residents might've headed "down the shore," but there’s still plenty going on around town this week. Tuesday is especially busy with at Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville at 8 p.m., Rockville Town Square hosting its weekly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Rockville Bike Advisory Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. at King Farm Homestead Park for and returning to the Rockville Skate Park. for our report from the first week of the skate park concert series.
  • The city recently announced a couple of events to be sure to get on your calendar: The 26th DARCARS Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest will be held on July 16 in Town Center with an 8K race that includes a wheelchair division, a 1K fun run, music and food. (For you teenage vampire fans out there, no, the race does not have anything to do with "Twilight" movies—though it is held in July so there are often a lot of shirtless guys running.) Click here for registration and more information.
Maxine Hong Kingston will be this year’s honoree at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference on Oct. 22 at Montgomery College-Rockville. Kingston’s works include “The Woman Warrior,” “China Men,” “Tripmaster Monkey,” “The Fifth Book of Peace” and “I Love a Broad Margin to My Life.” She has received the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the presidentially-conferred National Humanities Medal and the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation. See the conference’s Web site for more information and updates.
