The Candidates are Coming! (Which Explains the Wind Warning?) and Invasion of the (Alleged) Purse Snatchers

The season is fast approaching. March Madness? Baseball? No, election season in the City of Rockville. The schedule () leads off today's rundown:

  • The city has posted its calendar of important dates and deadlines for the biennial rite of fall where residents choose a mayor and council. The filing deadline for candidates is Sept. 9. Election Day is Nov. 8. Ladies and gentleman, start your engines. (Here we go again.) 
  • The updated city election Web page also includes a map that allows voters to determine their voting district for city elections and a link to information about voter registration and other election issues at county Board of Elections's Web site.
  • Here's a sign of a coming season that we all can be happy about: Registration opened Thursday for the City of Rockville's spring recreation programs.
  • March's lion is roaring early. Batten down the hatches. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Friday.
  • The Maryland Senate on Thursday passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. Attention now turns to the House of Delegates, where a committee holds a hearing on the legislation today.
  • County police have identified the officer who shot a man early Wednesday after a traffic stop near Redland Middle School.
  • Our friends across the river report that Fairfax County . Not exactly Bonnie and Clyde, though police say the duo rang up an estimated $100,000 in fraudulent credit card purchases after 50 incidents within an 18-month period at shopping centers, most of them in Montgomery and Fairfax counties.
