One Rockville Under a Groove

Bow wow wow, yippie yo, yippie yea, live from the mothership it's 'The Rundown.'

Welcome to Tuesday, Rockville. It's supposed to be a bit warmer outside today. Enjoy it. It could be our last chance to see the sun until the weekend.

(Keep your fingers crossed for Opening Day. Not to worry Orioles fans, not only do the Birds open up on the road, they'll be playing indoors in arguably the least charming venue in the majors—unless you're into marine biology.)

For those of you caught in the late March funk, we've got another kind of funk for you—the good kind of funk—and the promise of summer concerts.

Let's "turn this mutha out" with the "funky emotions" edition of "The Rundown":

  • Do you want the funk? The mothership will be landing in Rockville on Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30, and George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will tear the roof off of Hometown Holidays 2011 as the headliners of the three-day festival, Colleen McQuitty, the city's special events coordinator, told the City Council on Monday. P-Funk will headline Sunday's concert. Pop-rock artist Bob Schneider will headline Saturday's show.
  • The City Council heard the fiscal 2012 operating and capital budget proposal presentation on Monday. The proposed budget is now posted on the city's Web site.
  • The Art Gallery hosts an exhibition of mixed media and photography by Artsites—the Guild for Judaic Art, by Elroy Williams and by North Bethesda Camera Club from April 3 to 26. An opening reception from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on April 3 offers the chance to meet the artists and features classic acoustic rock, country, traditional and contemporary Irish and folk music by Sarno & Hess.
  • The Maryland Wineries Association has a revamped Web site at www.MarylandWine.com. The site features news and information on the Maryland wine industry, including big news from Annapolis that has Maryland's 50 licensed wineries and their loyal patrons buzzing (from the news, we think). The Maryland Senate on Monday approved legislation allowing direct wine shipping to Maryland homes, The Baltimore Sun reported. The House of Delegates has already passed the measure and Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) has said he will sign it. Which all means more visitors to the wineries association's extensive database of Maryland wines, calendar of winery events and festivals and registration for the recently launched Maryland Wine Passport program.
  • The crisis in Japan continues to hit home. Just up Frederick Road, Gaithersburg Patch columnist Shihoko Goto diverges from the usual fare of her "GoTo Mom" column to write about .
  • And on a much lighter note, a cobra went missing at the Bronx Zoo in New York over the weekend. On Monday he started tweeting. We tweet too @RockvillePatch. The news of a tweeting snake begs the question: If Rockville were to have a tweeting animal tour guide, what would he or she be? Post your answers on our Facebook page. Best answer gets a shout-out on a future edition of "The Rundown"—and maybe a "Friday Follow" on "the Twitter."
