Foreign Wedding and a Funeral

Wow! It was a little wacky with that weather out there on Thursday.

We'll have more on the weather, including some preparedness tips for this thunderstorm (and tornado) season.

Preparedness tip No. 1: When there are tornado warnings, be sure that noise that sounds like a train really is a train. The parents of a good friend of mine moved to North Carolina a couple of weeks before the Raleigh area was slammed by tornadoes a couple weekends ago. They did not have their television or radio on (and no Patch!) and later remarked that they hadn't realized they had moved so close to the train tracks. That Lowe's store that had the roof sheered off that was on all the TV news reports? It turns out that it's two miles from their new home.

(I'm really not trying to make light of how tragic things have been this spring. Now, here's the "Twister" (bonus points if you can name the Montgomery County native who appears in that movie) edition of "The Rundown":

• Speaking of watching for rain, all you royal watchers worried about it raining on Will and Kate's parade—well, parade and wedding—are able to get a slice of the royal wedding, right here in Rockville. (How do I even know the weather forecast in London? Ahhh! I told myself I was going to avoid all of this, but all the trending on Twitter and all the Web traffic says that this is what the people want. Even if the American Revolution says otherwise).
  Through today, is featuring two dessert specials in honor of the happy couple: Prince William's favorite chocolate biscuit cake (as seen on NBC4) and fruit cake, which Againn reports is "the traditional royal wedding cake"—insert favorite antimonarchical joke here. Now the good part: All of the proceeds from the sale of the cakes will go to Againn's selected charity from the Royal Charity Fund, Peace Players International, an international organization started in DC to foster peace by bringing children together through sports. Cheers to the happy couple.
• Speaking of good causes, the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless will hold its 15th annual Shelter Walk 'n Roll on Sunday. Registration and festivities begin at 1 p.m. at  with live music and presentations about homelessness in our community before and after the 1-mile walk around Town Square.

• For those of you who are not so much into the royals, but who are happy that the NFL lockout seems to be coming to an end (maybe),  from Rockville Town Square’s . "The Sports Reporters" will broadcast from 4-7 p.m. Special visitors will be on hand from 7-9 p.m. No reservations required. the Skins took a defensive end/linebacker from Purdue with their first pick. As an alumnus of a school that knows a thing or two about Big Ten linebackers, I can't complain—but I really hope they pick up an O-linemen somewhere. Bruce Allen, I await your call.
• If you are too young or too new to town to remember William Donald Schaefer, this week provided a last chance to reflect on Maryland's version of royalty (if only in the sense that his critics, and maybe some of the folks who worked for him, know what a royal pain he could be). Maryland—and especially his hometown of Baltimore—said goodbye this week with , a through the streets of Charm City and on Wednesday.

• Looking for a safe way to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs? The Montgomery County Police Department is participating in the second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday as part of an effort to prevent pill abuse and theft. Officers will have collection boxes in the parking lots of the county police headquarters at 2350 Research Blvd. in Rockville and the 5th District Station at 20000 Aircraft Drive in Germantown. A collection box also will be posted in the lobby of the 2nd District Station, at 7359 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda.
