Bikes, the Pike and 'Who Do You Like?'

It's the 'pollen-hating' edition of 'The Rundown.'

Not much sunshine and bit of a breeze kicking out there today. There's a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. Here's hoping that it wipes out some of the pollen. The yellow rings on my car are kind of gross and my puffy, bloodshot eyes would be most appreciative if Rockville took a shower.

And now, the "we've got the seven-day forecast coming up later. Back to you, Jim" edition of "The Rundown":

  • The Rockville City Council on Monday recognized 78 people (69 of whom are listed here) who biked 150 miles or more in 2010 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Rockville's founding. The group included late city environmental activist and bike advocate Carl Henn and Councilman Mark Pierzchala, who said that he earned his 150 miles simply by riding his bike an average of five miles a trip to about 30 meetings where he represented the city.
  • In other biking news, Councilman John Britton announced that the city has formed a committee on pedestrian and bicyclist access and safety with the city's first pedestrian and bicyclist coordinator. The city also formed a working group comprising city staff and members of the Rockville Bike Advisory Committee, the Traffic and Transportation Commission and the Environment Commission to advise the City Council on pedestrian and bicyclist safety issues.
"So this moves us significantly to a pedestrian-first city and a city that takes into account bicycle access and safety in everything we do and it puts us, I think, at the top of a hierarchy of jurisdictions around the country that will do this," Britton said.

  • The Rockville Planning Commission meets at 7 tonight for the commission's first work session on the Rockville Pike draft plan.
  • U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen will host a forum from 7 to 8:30 tonight in the cafeteria of the  in Rockville Town Center with representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy. Ninth-, 10th-, and 11th-grade students and their parents are invited to attend to learn about the academies and their admission requirements.
