Beall Basketball, Congressional Art and a Giant Hand for the Troops
The St. Patty's Day hangover edition of 'The Rundown.'
Ouch. My head hurts. No, I didn't close the pub on St. Patrick's Day. If you must know, I had my customary pint of Guinness and left it at that.
But there's been so much going on this week, from to that big basketball tournament, that T.G.I.F. never rang so true.
So without any further ado, let's set the Bachman-Turner to overdrive (to steal a line from our regional editor's email status) and take care of business with a (to steal a line from Loverboy*) "Everybody's Working for the Weekend" edition of "The Rundown":

- Say your alma mater got knocked out of the NCAA tournament on a last second shot (hypothetically speaking, of course). You want to watch basketball but the NCAA tournament is just too painful (and the Wizards' play can't really be considered basketball). Try where Beall Elementary parents and teachers square off in the rubber match of this third annual event to see who are the kings and queens of the court.
- Hey high schoolers! U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen wants your art. The congressman's office is accepting entries for the annual art competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives now until March 25—one week from today. Students who live in the Eighth Congressional District or attend a school there are eligible to submit entries through Van Hollen's office. The winning entry from the Eighth Congressional District will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol alongside artwork from every congressional district in country. A juried exhibition of submitted work from the Eighth District will be on display at in Rockville Town Square from April 6 to May 4.
- Reaction to County Executive Isiah Leggett's has rolled in from around the county throughout the week, including from County Council President Valerie Ervin, County Councilwoman Nancy Floreen and Montgomery College President DeRionne Pollard. Yesterday we reported how Leggett's decision not to meet the school system's request for an $82 million increase in county aid .
- At the Greater Greater Washington blog, editor David Alpert compares the City of Rockville's vision for Rockville Pike to that of the Montgomery County. The Rockville Planning Commission heard a second night of testimony on the city's Pike plan on Wednesday. More to come on that on Patch.
- Step back in time and support military families with 1940s-themed Canteen Night festivities at Giant Food stores around the region from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Closest to Rockville will be the Canteen Night at the Giant at 5400 Westbard Ave. in Bethesda. From now through March 31, customers can make donations of $1, $3 or $5 at the register to help establish a USO Food Pantry and support USO programs in the Washington metropolitan area. Stores also will accept non-perishable food items, especially canned fruits and vegetables, 100 percent fruit juice, soup, peanut butter, pasta and granola bars. Today's World War II-era promotion will feature entertainment, music, dancing, coffee and donuts. The USO of Metropolitan Washington's Mobile Unit will be at the Bethesda store.
