A Workshop, a Doc and a Library Stop-the-Clock

It's the 'gotta go' edition of 'The Rundown.'

Happy Friday, Rockville.

The heat and humidity is finally giving us a break as we settle into the dog days.

We all should get out there and enjoy it. In that spirit, let’s keep this brief. Here’s the “rapid fire” edition of “The Rundown”:

  • Finances are on everyone’s mind these days. Debt crisis averted. Five hundred point market loss. Jobs report rebound. Investors aren’t so sure. Well, I’m getting seasick.
For folks facing foreclosure, the county’s Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development are hosting a free workshop on Maryland’s Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the , One Veterans Place, Silver Spring.
To pre-register for the workshop, go to www.mdhope.org and click on “Attend the Montgomery County EMA Workshop,” or call 410-514-7324.
  • In an election year, it’s not a bad idea to look back at the history of the office. Rockville 11 does just that with a new two-part documentary “"Profiles in Leadership: Rockville's Mayors 1982-2009." The documentary takes an in-depth look at the terms of the city's seven previous mayors.
"This program presents a unique perspective through the eyes of the former mayors on the big changes the city has undergone during the past thirty years," Rockville 11 station manager Bridget Broullire said in a news release. "It's an informative and entertaining walk through history."
“Profiles in Leadership” is broadcast daily on Rockville 11 and is available on demand on the city's website and on the Rockville 11 YouTube channel.
  • The city, in an attempt to foster greater participation by residents in long-range planning, is forming a Citizens Implementation Committee.
The committee will “identify ways to further engage citizens and stakeholders in key planning initiatives, such as the Comprehensive Master Plan and other citywide initiatives," according to a news release.
Meetings of the 11-member committee will begin in September.
Those interested in joining the committee should contact Orlando Heyliger, neighborhood resources coordinator, at 240-314-8343 or oheyliger@rockvillemd.gov.

  • When I was in school I always hated “butts” or—even worse—“backsy butts” in the lunch line. (You’re still a jerk and now I’m that much closer to slapping you in the back of your head.) But it was cool if a friend would hold a place in line.
Now, the county public libraries can be that friend.
Beginning Monday, the libraries’ online library accounts will allow customers who have reserved materials to keep their place in the “holds queue.” Customers who go out-of-town or have an emergency and aren’t able to pick up requested material are able to keep their place in line for the requested material by using the “suspend holds” feature in the online account system.

  • Rockville Patch will save your place in line, because you’re our friend. You are our “friend” at Rockville Patch on Facebook, right? Or maybe you follow us @RockvillePatch on Twitter. (It’s not the “backsy butts” kind of following.)
