It’s been a busy week—especially for a four-day workweek. Sheesh. I thought the livin’ was supposed to be easy in the summertime.

  • Twinbrook Day in the Park is from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at and . The day provides a great way to see class demonstrations and experience all that the neighborhood recreation center has to offer.
  • The F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference, Inc. is sponsoring its Short Story Contest. The contest is open to residents of Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia and is divided into adult and student contests.
    Unpublished stories of no more than 3,000 words should be submitted online or postmarked by July 15 and mailed to . Entry fee is $25.
    First prize is $1,000, an invitation to read at the 16th Annual F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference and publication in Potomac Review. Three runners-up will receive $200 each.

  • The National Philharmonic offers promising young musicians a chance to hone their skills and work with professionals through its summer string and choral institutes.
    The institutes teach musical skills and techniques to middle and high school string players and high school and college vocalists, preparing them for a culminating performance.
    The High School/College Summer Choral Institute will be held from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 18-22 at .
    The Summer String Institutes will be held August 1-5 for high school students and August 8-12 for middle school students at .
