A Benefit Show, A Restaurant Name to Bestow and to Brunch We Go

It's the 'won't you be my neighbor?' edition of 'The Rundown.'

Happy Friday, Rockville.

Why do the shortened holiday weeks always seem longer? And why do I always forget that trash day gets bumped back a day on those weeks?

(A thanks to my neighbor who caught me dragging recyclables to the curbside last night and set straight this new homeowner. After a decade as a townhouse/apartment dweller you just kind of expect the Dumpsters to be there 24/7. This whole scheduled throw-away day stuff is complicated. )

It’s another beautiful day in the neighborhood and promises to be a great weekend weather-wise. I hope you get a chance to enjoy it, maybe with a cooler and grill in the backyard. Oh, and if you live in my neighborhood (where we don’t always sing when we tie our shoes), remember trash day is Saturday this week.

Now here’s the “Rockin’ the Suburbs” edition of “The Rundown”:

  • Back when the local-boy-made-good-music was an Artist in Residence at Strathmore.
On Wednesday, Garber returns to —the church that he grew up attending—for .
Proceeds benefit the Moringa Tree Project in the Republic of the Congo, Hope Unlimited for Children in Brazil, and Peter Graeff, an independent development professional working on health, education, and water issues in Haiti.
Suggested minimum donations are $15 for adults and $10 for school-aged children.
As someone who’s seen Garber play the Irish pubs of the area (including —a space where Garber's late, great father used to play as half of the duo Holly and Lou) I can attest to his showmanship and musicianship. If you go, expect a great time for some great causes.
  • Maybe there’s hope for Congress yet. The next generation of elected leaders recently experienced what it’s like to participate in a Congressional hearing as students at staged a simulated hearing.
The Montgomery County Public Schools Web site has video of the hearing, which was judged by some real-life elected officials, including (from what this former education and political reporter can tell from the video) school board member Judy Docca and state delegates Jim Gilchrist, Kathleen Dumais and Luiz Simmons.
  • A couple of items via our friends at Rockville Central: First, the East Rockville Civic Association is adding some bounce to its annual yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 11 at The Pump House, at 401 South Horners Lane.
The event is rain or shine and will include live entertainment and a moon bounce. Space is available for crafts people and neighbors to sell their wares and for entertainers to perform. The fee is $5 for ERCA members who haven’t paid their dues (and you know who you are).
Email Chas Hausheer at vp.erca@gmail.com for more information.
  • Our second item comes to us via Rockville Central from the Bethesda-based online branding and marketing company Sisarina and offers the chance to name a new restaurant on the Pike (TGIPatch’s? No? McSeanold’s? I’m thinking we could get this done with a bit of an online campaign of our own. Tell you what: Suggest a name in our comments section and, if it’s deemed “electable”—there’s one of those terrible, wonky, political words—“Rockville Rundown” will take up the cause.)
  • If you suggest a name for a new Pike restaurant, don’t suggest Matchbox. . Now it’s a place to take the family for weekend brunch, beginning this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • What’s brunch? Well, as Jacques, the bowling instructor who woos Marge on “The Simpsons,” tells us: “It’s not quite breakfast, it’s not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of cantaloupe at the end. You don’t get completely what you would at breakfast, but you get a good meal.” (No easily findable YouTube clip of this one. Darn.)
  • We like cantaloupe. If you’d like to go to brunch, tweet us—or just follow us—on Twitter @RockvillePatch. Be our “friend” at Rockville Patch on Facebook.
