Nationally Recognized Team Selected to Design Biomedical Sciences, Engineering Facility at the Universities at Shady Grove

Venture Marks Beginning of Planning and Design of USG’s Fourth Academic Building, Which Will Bring Many of State’s Top Biomedical, Engineering Programs to Montgomery County

 

Architectural firm Cooper Carry in collaboration with Lake|Flato has been selected by the University System of Maryland (USM) to manage the design and construction administration of the planned Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Education Facility to be built on the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) campus in Rockville, Md.

Located in Atlanta, Ga., Alexandria, Va. and New York, N.Y., Cooper Carry is nationally recognized for its experience and leadership designing world class science facilities. Cooper Carry has completed more than four million square feet of science, technology, engineering, math and medical sciences (STEMM) facilities that included health science, basic science, engineering, and workforce development classrooms and labs. Lake|Flato of San Antonio, TX is an award winning design firm that brings a distinguished aptitude for seamlessly integrating architectural design with sustainability and efficient systems. The firm’s success with incorporating the demanding programmatic requirements of higher education facilities with the environmental and campus context is evident in many of Lake|Flato’s LEED certified projects, including eight national American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment “Top Ten Green” projects.

The selection of the design team that will lead the $162 million, 220,000 square-foot project is another milestone for the growing campus, as USG recently celebrated the approval of combined state and county funding to design and build the fourth academic building, a parking garage and a new entrance for the campus. The new biomedical sciences and engineering education facility is slated to break ground in 2016 and open in fall of 2018.

 

In this year’s Maryland General Assembly, legislators successfully secured an additional appropriation for a total of $9.3 million for the preliminary planning and design, making way for the new building that will serve thousands of additional students in science, technology, engineering, math and medical sciences (STEMM) programs. The new biomedical and engineering education building will provide state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, active learning classrooms, clinical training facilities, academic offices, and an expanded level of student services necessary to support program and enrollment growth. Co-designed laboratory space and equipment will be shared and serve the need of multiple academic programs. Innovation and product design labs will provide flexible space for inter-disciplinary student research projects.

 

Focusing on a sustainable and efficient design, the new facility aspires to be one of the most sustainable laboratory buildings in the country. The planned USG biomedical sciences and engineering education facility will be located in close proximity to the University System of Maryland Institute for Biosciences and Biotechnology Research (IBBR), providing students access to the latest research to support their studies, and allowing commercial and research partnerships to flourish in the region.
