Emergent BioSolutions Plans to Leave Rockville For Gaithersburg

The biodefense contractor is the sole provider of the anthrax vaccine to the U.S. government.

Emergent BioSolutions plans to move its Rockville headquarters to Gaithersburg, consolidating its Maryland operations into one campus.

The biodefense contractor is the only FDA-licensed maker the anthrax vaccine.

Montgomery County officials announced Thursday that the State of Maryland gave Emergent $2 million and Montgomery County gave $750,000 in incentives.

On Monday, the Gaithersburg City Council unanimously approved a $250,000 grant as part of an economic development incentive agreement after the company asked the city for help funding the renovation of its new headquarters.

Tom Lonergran, Gaithersburg’s director of Economic Development, told told The Gazette, the first to report the initial story that grant would be the fifth of its type funded from Gaithersburg’s Economic Development Opportunities Fund.

The move, which will take about a year to complete, is expected to add 133 jobs, The Gazette reports.

Emergent plans to move all of its employees to an office building it plans to buy at 400 Professional Drive, according to records filed with the City of Gaithersburg.

There are 112 employees at Emergent’s Rockville headquarters at 2273 Research Boulevard.  Emergent employs 123 people at its research facility at 300 Professional Drive in Gaithersburg, city records show.
