Saying 'I Do' All Over Again

More than 800 couples will be honored for their long marriages at a special Mass.

When Pat Morse took his seat on the first day of English class at his Milwaukee high school in 1933, he had no idea that the new girl who walked in, Margaret, would change his life forever. “I was sitting at my desk and this young chick walks in down the aisle. She turned and smiled at everyone and I said to myself, ‘That’s the girl.’” Margaret became his wife six years later on June 3, 1939 when they were both 22 years old.

The couple will renew their vows on the date of their 73rd wedding anniversary at the annual Jubilarian Mass, celebrated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, making them the couple with the longest marriage recognized by the archdiocese this year.

Sunday, June 3, 2012

2:00 p.m. Mass (Renewal of vows follows the homily)

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue, NE, Washington, DC

Pat and Margaret began dating shortly after they met in that high school English class. Pat recalled, “Every Friday night when I went to my father for 50 cents to go on a date, he’d say, ‘Don’t you know any Catholic girls?’” He and Margaret say their faith has been a big part of their marriage, he said. The couple, both 95 years old, still live independently and attend Mass at Our Lady Queen of Poland Parish in Silver Spring. They have seven children, 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Their oldest child is a religious sister. Pat, a World War II veteran, is a retired attorney, and Margaret retired as an accountant.

The Morse’s are among the 804 couples that have registered to have their milestone anniversaries recognized by the archdiocese this year, totaling 36,070 years of marriage. The marriages range from 25 to 73 years, with 406 couples married for 50 or more years. Eight couples have been married for 70 or more years. Parishes from across the archdiocese are represented, including 36 couples from St. Patrick Parish in Rockville in Montgomery County, as will 24 couples from Holy Family Parish in Mitchellville in Prince George’s County, and 16 from Holy Ghost Parish in Issue in Southern Maryland.

Pat and Margaret Morse will be among the 582 couples who will attend the Mass.

In addition to renewing their vows and receiving a special blessing during Mass, all couples will receive personalized certificates commemorating their special anniversary following Mass.

Dear Patch editors: Thank YOU for this disclaimer:
"This is a press release from the Archdiocese of Washington. The Archdiocese of Washington is home to more than 600,000 Catholics living in Washington, DC, and five Maryland counties: Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s." Imagine a Catholic Church that celebrates the long-term marriages gay couples! The bishops can't stay in the Dark Ages forever; even their nuns are rebelling. Also, let's remember its related hypocrisy. Although it claims to support and protect marriage, the dirty secret is the Catholic church grants 60,000 or more annulments per year among long-married couples with children, even when one spouse objects.

Wow....rebelling nuns and dirty little secrets.....who knew?

Good morning, Jeff. Who knew? People who keep up with the church!

Twinbrook Swimming Pool (TSP) can hold three public open house days to introduce the pool toRead More perspective members. This year the dates are June 8, July 13 and August 10. The cost is $5 per person. The TSP has a big insurance policy to cover swimmers. Not sure free is appropriate. As a private membership pool, there are regulations that must be followed.

Does either county or city pool offer free trial periods? I don't think so.

If you swim on the 3 open public swim days at the Twinbrook Swimming Pool, you can consider it aRead More trial. Liability insurance does cost money. Entrance of $5 is a real bargain. Members pay to maintain the pool.

I am so sorry this happened to your girls! There is no excuse for the theater personnel notRead More helping. I hope you get an apology from management. Perhaps the city police should have an officer in the area after the last movie.

Yaaaay! Lets put it on the police again. Good thinking the Deb. How about Kate gets her daughter aRead More chaperone. Ask 2 people and then a movie theatre employee and then walk home? That story sounds really fishy. I don't believe the world is in as bad a shape as Kate purports.

I think more facts are necessary here. When you didn't hear from them you didn't go to theater toRead More find them? It is hard to know where blame lies here, not knowing how old these girls are. It sounds like your daughter and god daughter don't have their own phones? No matter my children's age, I make it a point to know the running times of the movies they're at, especially if I am the one who is going to be picking them up. We warn children--especially girls and young women--not to go to strangers for help. We know that of the three girls, the man kidnapped one who was his daughter's friend after giving her a lift.
