Did you know that more pets go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year? Make this your year to change that!

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and avoid their landing in a shelter the day after all the festivities:

Leave your pet safe and comfortable in your home with a favorite treat or toy.  You may think it would be fun to take your dog out for the fireworks but your dog most likely won’t agree.  The noise and crowds are more than most canines enjoy.

Don’t leave your pet – or an infant, or anyone who’s frail or ill – in a hot, parked car.   Even at 70 degrees, you car can heat up like an oven in just a few minutes, resulting in heatstroke and even death.  Don’t cook your dog!

If you know your pet is sensitive to sounds, check with your veterinarian before the holiday for how reduce fear and anxiety. You may want to try a natural remedy such as a Thundershirt, lavender oil, Rescue Remedy or DAP (Comfort Zone).

If your pet is wearing identification tags, there’s a much greater chance of getting a lost dog or cat back from a shelter.   The day after July 4 is typically the busiest day of the year for lost pets finding their way to a shelter.  Basic ID, a license tag, and a microchip will help speed the reunion process.
