PHOTO GALLERY: Strathmore Photo Exhibit Builds Bridges

Exhibit combines fine art photography with photojournalism to cross cultures.

"Building Bridges, Not Fences," a photography exhibition at the Mansion at that runs through Nov. 5, focuses on two major aspects of photography: the transition from darkroom to digital techniques and the ability of photojournalism to bridge cultural divides.

Featuring the work of American photographers Bruce Barnbaum, Dean Kessman and Bruce McKaig, Cuban photographers Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Enrique de la Uz, Pedro Abscal and Nestor Hernandez and Israeli photographers Shay Aloni and Ammar Younis, the exhibit tells many stories.

It provides a glimpse into Barnbaum's classic black and white landscapes and asbtract photographs composed by layering and cropping negatives, followed by digital reinterpretations of these darkroom techniques through Kessman's architectural and McKaig's narrative-focused photography.

Reflecting on issues of identity, ethnic heritage and street culture, photographers depict daily life in their native Cuba. Their images, like those of Aloni and Younis, provide a first-hand documentary account of two highly-mythologized cultural contexts.

Aloni and Younis capture shifting cultural and generational motifs in the Middle East, depicting Arab elders in the intimacy of their homes and making statements or raising questions about the status of modernization in the region.

The Umm el-Fahem Art Gallery, which showcases Arab art in Israel to promote peace and understanding between cultures, loaned Aloni and Younis's photographs to Strathmore.

Extensive adult and children's programming centered on the art of photography accompanies the exhibit throughout the month of October.

Nancy Breslin will teach a camera-less photography workshop for children and families from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Breslin also will teach a more advanced class for adults from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday where students will study and create their own cyanotype and lumen prints.

Chris Peregoy, a visual art professor at the , will teach a pinhole camera workshop at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. Students will learn how to make a camera using ordinary household objects, such as a cookie tin, suitcase or coconut.
