Olney Theatre Center Will Be Alive With The Sound of Music

Olney, MD – October 26, 2011 -  Olney Theatre Center, a 73-year-old professional, award-winning, year round Theatre, announces the opening of The Sound of Music, a Broadway musical that has sparked one of the world’s most popular movies, a half dozen hit songs which are now classics, and thousands of holiday memories. The Sound of Music takes to Olney Theatre Center’s Mainstage on beginning November 16, 2011 and will run through January 1, 2012.

Since the story of the Von Trapp family and Maria, a nun turned governess who brings the Austrian family together through the power of song on the eve of World War II, debuted on Broadway, it has become a much loved holiday tradition on stage and screen for generations of families. The Broadway musical, starring Mary Martin and Theo Bikel, was released in 1959, and was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.  The 1965 movie, with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, made its songs even more popular: "The Sound of Music", "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Do-Re-Mi" are much loved standards today.

"The musical is filled with memorable songs in its rich Rodgers and Hammerstein score,” said Olney Theatre Center’s Artistic Director Jim Petosa. “We're convinced that generations of families will find their time in the theatre all the more precious because of their quality and the enduring nature of the story."

Award-winning director Mark Waldrop returns to delight audiences with this family classic that is sure to warm their hearts for the holiday season. Audiences might remember Waldrop’s last production at Olney Theatre Center, Annie, which was nominated for five Helen Hayes Awards, including Best Resident Musical, and played to sold out houses.

Tickets start at $26; please contact the Olney Theatre Center Box Office at (301) 924-3400 to make reservations.
