Science Café: "Micro Medicine: Nano Technology and Cancer"

Future Rockville Science Café, Save the Date: Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Branded '72, 387 Gude Road, Rockville, MD 20850, 7:00-8:00 pm

Topic: Theranostics was initially defined as thera(py) + (diag)nostics, a term used to link a diagnostic to therapeutic, which is expected to improve patient outcomes, including safety, with a more personalized approach to medicine. Theranostic nanomedicine has evolved to encompass integrated, biocompatible nanoparticle platforms that contain both therapeutic and imaging components. These nanoparticles may carry chemo-, radio- or gene therapeutics or combinations of these. In this lecture, several multifunctional nanoparticle formulas will be demonstrated that, with appropriate intrinsic physicochemical properties or appropriate labels, these nanoparticles allow us to diagnose disease and evaluate treatment efficacy, while we track the particles’ pharmacokinetics and release of the drugs.
