Portion of Metropolitan Branch Trail Opened

Montgomery County announces the trail in Silver Spring is open from the south end of the MARC train platform to the transit plaza in front of the Metro Station.

A portion of a walking and biking trail adjacent to the Silver Spring Transit Center opened Thursday, Montgomery County officials announced today. The Metropolitan Branch Trail allows pedestrians to connect to the northbound MARC platform again, according to the county.

On Thursday, a part of the trail that extends from the south end of the MARC platform to the transit plaza in front of the Metrorail station opened. The trail will extend to Ripley Street next month, if weather permits, the county said in an announcement.

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is an 8-mile trail that runs from Silver Spring to Union Station in the District. Completion of the trail in Silver Spring was one of several recommendations given by local bike advocacy groups to prepare Montgomery County for a bikeshare program.

What do you think? Will you be using this section of the trail?

So that's a few hundred feet of what is supposedly going to be an 8 mile long trail. The Montgomery County Planning Board approved Montgomery County’s segment of the MetBranch Trail in 2001, yet it's taken 12 years just to get this segment done. 12 years? So I guess Montgomery County's portion should be all done by about 2075. I guess our grandchildren might be able to attend the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile the so-called mass transit center is now four years behind opening date and millions more in cost overruns, with no firm date set for coming on line. This from one of the country's.ten richest counties.

More reason not to support the stupid Purple line metro. HERE WE ARE, 10 years behind schedule on a project like the mass center in DT silver spring and they can't get it done. NO to the PURPLE LINE until we have new leadership and the money (without raising taxes). Common sense.

The vast majority the MBT has been open for years now. It's the trail that runs parallel to the Red Line for much of the time, in case you're confused.
