Patch Picks: Picnic Spots

Enjoy a casual meal in the fresh air.

Spring is excellent for picnics. Whether your idea of a picnic is to bring a basket, grill alfresco or purchase some goodies along the way, Rockville has a range of parks for you to enjoy. Here are a few:

  • Picnic and Nature: Enjoy a picnic at and nature at the park's Locust Grove Nature Center.  The park has shelters, tables, drinking fountains, grills and restrooms. A snack bar is open on weekends and holidays from late spring through Labor Day.
  • Picnic and Baseball: Enjoy a picnic and cheer on a local baseball team at . The park offers three grills for barbecuing. Enjoy your picnic at one of the 18 picnic tables or in the bleachers of one of the three baseball fields, where the Rockville Baseball Association holds games. When games are going on there is a concession stand offering hot dogs, ice cream, snacks and drinks. You’ll also find play equipment, tennis courts, and volleyball courts for the non-baseball fans in your family.
  • Picnic and Trails: Enjoy a picnic and a hike or bike ride on the trails through the forest preserve and urban wildlife sanctuary at . There are six grills and six picnic tables and park benches, as well as play equipment, tennis courts and a basketball court.
  • Picnic and Fishing: Enjoy a picnic and a fishing pond , the site of a 2009 restoration project. There is a park shelter, a gazebo, nine picnic tables, two grills and park benches. For non-fishermen there is play equipment, a baseball field, a softball field, a soccer/football field and three basketball courts.
  • Picnic with Fido: Your dog is welcome to join your picnic at the at . The park has picnic tables and benches. There are drinking fountains for you and your dog. The park is free to Rockville residents, but you must complete and return a participation agreement to be eligible to use the dog park.
