Wednesday will mark three years since Erick Brown’s passing. The Derwood resident lived on this earth for 12 years. It was 12 years longer than doctors expected when he was born on March 1, 1996 without a spleen and with six different heart defects. The “miracle child” survived the early struggles and surgery and went on to live an incredibly full 12 years.

Erick had a sharp mind and easily absorbed facts and details that most children ignored. Before the age of 5, he could name every president and state capital of the United States. In school, he won awards for his Christian character and for his outstanding academic performance in school, where he became a tutor. He even took on the role of a philanthropist at that age, taking an interest in nonprofit organizations aimed at feeding hungry children.

Though Erick is gone, work to feed the hungry continues in his name. His parents, Donna and Richard Brown, founded the nonprofit Erick's Hope to continue what their son started.

“Erick’s Hope exists to serve children in need of love and security by providing spiritual, emotional, physical, and educational support through a variety of programs and services," Donna Brown said.

Corrections: The spelling of Erick Brown's name has been corrected in the headline and in the third paragraph from the bottom. The first paragraph has been corrected to say that Erick had a single surgery, not multiple surgeries as was suggested. The second paragraph was corrected to say that Erick won awards for academics and character in elementary school. Rockville Patch regrets the errors.
