9 Students Awarded Grants From Rockville Scholarship Foundation

Students honored Monday during the Rockville City Council meeting.

Nine students were awarded grants by the Rockville Scholarship Foundation and were honored at the Rockville City Council meeting Monday.

The Rockville Scholarship Foundation is a partnership between the City of Rockville and Montgomery College’s Rockville campus. Since its inception in 1985, the foundation has granted more than 150 scholarships worth more than $200,000 to Rockville students pursuing post-secondary education.

The 2013 awardees are:

Ekaterina Goryunova ($2,000) is an immigrant from Russia attending Montgomery College and pursuing her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Kate Hamelburg ($1,500) is a senior at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and a resident of Rockville. She plans to attend Brandeis University to pursue a Judiac Studies and Education degree.

Jeanice Hwang ($1,000) is a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School International Baccalaureate program and a resident of Rockville. She recently completed her first year at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on a path toward medical school.

Zinab Jadidi ($1,000) is a recent immigrant from Iran attending Montgomery College and majoring in material science and engineering. With a 4.0 GPA and a passion for improving the world through science, Zinab plans to pursue the field of Nanotechnology, eventually earning a Ph.D.

Oren Lagziel ($1,000) is a senior at Thomas S. Wootton High school and plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park to study Bioengineering. Oren participates in the Academy of Information Technology program, a four-year program from the National Academy Foundation focused on IT. In addition, Oren is a volunteer counselor of Israeli Scouts and completed a web design internship at Mosaic Data Services.

Doris Okletey ($1,000) is a senior AP and honors student at Rockville High School and plans to attend Towson University to major in Biology. With a passion for caring for others, Doris eventually plans to complete medical school to be a Pediatric Cardiologist.

Boshra Peyrovi ($1,000) is a Life Sciences major earning high marks at Montgomery College. Boshra eventually plans to complete Dental School to support the community as a dentist. Boshra immigrated to the U.S. from Iran and is fluent in Farsi, English and Arabic. Boshra works part time at a dental office and enjoys hobbies such as reading, cooking, volleyball, music, traveling, scuba diving and photography.

Andoniaina Ramamonjisoa ($1,500) is an honors student at Montgomery College, Rockville majoring in accounting with a business administration minor. Andoniaina eventually plans to graduate from University of Maryland, College Park and become a certified public accountant.

Tony (Yitsong) Tang ($2,000) is a graduate of Thomas S. Wootton High School and is now a Phi Theta Kappa student at Montgomery College. Tony plans to pursue an Accounting degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Tony is the founder and CEO of NATIVE, a clothing firm that markets toward young adults.
