On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for much of Maryland and the D.C. metro area, effective from noon to midnight.

Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Frederick County, Harford County, Howard County, Montgomery County and Allegany County are included in the watch.

After Wednesday's storms dropped approximately 1 to 2 inches of precipitation, heavy rains expected Thursday afternoon and evening could lead to flash flooding, the National Weather Service reported.

Flash flooding is a rapid accumulation of water in a localized area that can make travel dangerous.

When drivers see standing water, officials advise: "Turn around—don't drown."
