Captain Tom Didone, Montgomery County, MD, recipient of the Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety "Highway Safety Hero Awards"

Captain Tom Didone

Captain Tom Didone has served with the Montgomery County, Maryland, Police Department for 27 years, focusing on traffic safety law enforcement. In this capacity, he is charged with investigating motor vehicle crashes - all-too-often ones that have resulted in critical injuries and fatalities.  Although Captain Didone has frequently delivered the tragic news to families that a loved one has been killed, never could he have imagined that on October 20, 2008, his own son would lose his life in a crash. Ryan, who was 15 at the time, was a passenger in a car being driven by a newly-licensed classmate. He and his four friends were on a curvy, rural road in Montgomery County going from a church youth meeting, when the car veered off the road and hit a tree. Ryan was killed, and the other kids were injured. As a traffic enforcement official, Captain Didone knows first-hand the risks posed to new, teen drivers. He has taken this professional expertise and his own personal tragedy to spur action on laws that promote safer driving behavior. Captain Didone has been a resolute champion for Graduated Driver Licensing laws and we are honored to call him a colleague and present him with this Highway Safety Hero award.
