The Rockville Rundown: 5 Things You Need to Know Today

Mother of the late Mattie Stepanek visits Rockville Retirement community today, plus readers respond to story on city's ruling denying a West End day care's expansion.

Today: Ingleside couple keeps youth best-seller’s Mmemory alive
Jeni Stepanek, the mother of the late Mattie Stepanek, will be at Ingleside at King Farm for a ceremony certifying the retirement community as a “Peace Community” through the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. Mattie is the 13-year-old best-selling poet who died in 2004 from a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Ingleside residents Bob and Laurin Balkam were the Stepanek family’s former neighbors and inspired the retirement community to become “Peace Community,” an Ingleside spokeswoman tells Patch. As long as you had the physical space for more kids, and you followed safety guidelines, I don't see why not. You are providing a valuable service.
