0 p.m.\nAppearance is never quite what it appears to be in John R. G. Ro
th&rsquo\;s Polymorphic Conveyances at VisArts. It glints\, undulates\,
shifts and rolls. Or\, suddenly it freezes in time like a specimen\, mem
orial or repetitive dream. What remains constant is Roth&rsquo\;s vision
. His exquisitely crafted\, polymorphic sculpture and furniture combine
gravitas\, folly and humor. Forthright yet eccentric forms carry communi
qu&eacute\;s linked to his thoughts about the relationship between resou
 rces\, commodities\, consumption\, politics\, world order and the natura
 l environment.\nAbout the Artist: John R. G. Roth\, raised in the Chicag
o area\, has held positions as a maintenance mechanic in a chemical plan
t\, foundry and a furniture factory. He worked as a construction worker\
, on dairy farms and as an art teacher in a four-room schoolhouse on the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Roth was also employed nine years in a res
earch lab fabricating models\, prototypes\, one of a kind machines as we
ll as destructive testing. Currently\, he is an Associate Professor of S
culpture at Old Dominion University in Norfolk\, VA and is&nbsp\;represe
nted by Mayer Fine Art Gallery of Norfolk\, VA.&nbsp\;\nRoth has an acti
ve exhibition record including shows in New York at Allan Stone Gallery\
, Veridian and Tria as well as prestigious venues in London\, Chicago\,
and Philadelphia. He has won numerous awards\, grants and fellowships in
cluding the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Old Dominion University Summer
