DESCRIPTION:DEBUSSY 150TH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL\nThe National Philharmonic
  celebrates the music of Claude Debussy in this festival marking the 150
 th anniversary of the birth of one of the most important French composer
 s. Debussy&rsquo\;s works\, like those of Impressionist painters\, empha
 size light and color and display the influence of the Symbolist poets&rs
 quo\; visionary images. The festival includes performances of Debussy&rs
 quo\;s most popular orchestral\, chamber and keyboard works as well as a
  Washington-area premiere of his magnificent large choral work\, The Mar
 tyrdom of St. Sebastian.\nALL DEBUSSY\n Brian Ganz\, piano\nRichard Stol
 tzman\, clarinet\nPiotr Gajewski\, conductor\nIn 1892\, Debussy began a 
 sensual and luminous composition inspired by a pastoral poem\,\nL&rsquo\
 ;Apr&egrave\;s-midi d&rsquo\;un Faune (&ldquo\;The Afternoon of a Faun&r
 dquo\;)\, published 16 years earlier by the great Symbolist poet St&eacu
 te\;phane Mallarm&eacute\;. The famous opening flute solo &ldquo\;brough
 t new breath to the art of music\,&rdquo\; said composer and conductor P
 ierre Boulez.\nAcclaimed pianist Brian Ganz performs the vibrant Fantais
 ie for Piano and Orchestra (1890). Two-time Grammy Award-winning clarine
 tist Richard Stoltzman plays Debussy&rsquo\;s dreamy and melodic Rhapsod
 y for Clarinet and Orchestra. Debussy\, who loved the sea\, never travel
 ed farther on it than across the English Channel. In La Mer\, however\, 
 his passion for the ocean is paramount\, as his orchestral music gives f
