The Richard Montgomery High School girls varsity basketball team is ready to surprise the county, according to Coach Jennifer Hoffman.   If the Rockets' 67-64 overtime victory against Quince Orchard at home on Tuesday night is any indication, they could be on the way to doing just that. When most basketball teams lose their leading scorer, coaches and owners start to unravel. Ask Cleveland Cavaliers fans. But longtime Magruder High boys basketball Coach Dan Harwood is not most coaches. Harwood, who has coached the Colonels to a state championship and two regional titles since 2001, couldn't be more excited about the 2010-11 season. "We have high expectations," Harwood said last week. "We lost one starting senior and a few role players. We have four returning starters this year who are ready to play." For Richard Montgomery High's boys basketball team, last year was a culmination of three years of hard work by a large senior class, said Coach Scott Spear. The team won the county's 4A East division and made it to the regional finals before being eliminated by Springbrook High. Now that senior class, including the 10 leading players on last year's team, is gone. But that doesn't mean that any less is expected of this group. Last year, Magruder High wrestling finished with mixed results. Looking at individual wrestlers, Magruder did very well.  As  a junior, Parke Overmiller was state champion. Three others reached the state tournament. However, as a team, the results were a little disappointing, as they only finished sixth in the regional tournament. This year, they look to take the next step as a team. "All those guys who made the state tournament are back this year," Coach Max Sartoph said.
