Valerie is right. My score is from the "brief grit" scale and not the complete or entire scale. However, the link provides details on how to score the shorter or complete version of the scale.

It still doesn't work out to a number between 17-40...directions have you assign each answer a number from 1-5 and then take the averages of different groups of questions to get the scores...

The 8 question-score (brief Grit) ranges from a low score of 1 to a high 5. You score ‘1’ by answering all 8 questions with ‘1s’ (the average of 8 ‘1s’ = 1 or 8 divided by 8 = 1), and you score a ‘5’ by answering all 8 questions with ‘5s’ (the average of 8 ‘5s’ = 5 or 40 divided by 8 = 5).

The 12 question-score (total or overall Grit) ranges from a low score of 1 to a high 5. You score ‘1’ by answering all 12 questions with ‘1s’ (the average of 12 ‘1s’ = 1 or 12 divided by 12 = 1), and you score a ‘5’ by answering all 12 questions with ‘5s’ (the average of 12 ‘5s’ = 5 or 60 divided by 12 = 5).

LOL!!! I was wondering if this post was a grit test. I calculated all my scores...surprise, I did well on the perseverance measure...yes, my family thinks I can be stubborn. No lunch owed...just keep writing articles.
