Review and Trailer: 'Star Trek Into Darkness:' Excitement at Warp Factor 10

Film is rated PG-13.

Boy, this is going to be one short review. This movie has more spoilers than the 1967 Enterprise had Tribbles … and in the interest of full disclosure, this is written by the Cinema Siren who owns chairs from the Voyager show, can list the original episodes in order of appearance, has a T-shirt with a quote in Klingon, and a model of the Enterprise signed by all the original cast members. That is to say, fandom lives here. Any experience of watching the new release by director J. J. Abrams would naturally be filtered through a brain steeped in Star Trek knowledge and lore. That being said, there is, unlike some long-term fans, no automatic hate for anything new. To my mind, the cast, theme, and story lines of the reboot are very much in …

Picture a mustachioed general, decked out in Patch Green, pointing a long, accusatory finger at you. Yes, you! Signing up is free and joining the pool is even cheaper—click here, or search "Show Us Your Patch of Montgomery County" on Flickr.com.   The perks of membership are innumerable. Roaring Maryland: 5 Places to Go 'Gatsby' Nearby

Author F. Scott Fitzgerald had deep ties in Maryland, some of which you can see for yourself.

Don't expect a glittering movie opening of the The Great Gatsby, and its mega stars Leonardio DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, anywhere near The Free State. F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of the novel that provided the inspiration for the 3D film, however, was deeply entrenched in the region during his lifetime, with landmarks to his family and his literary works sprinkled from Rockville to Towson.  Even if you're not lining up for the premiere Friday, find a little of Gatbsy's Roaring '20s vibe nearby: 1. The Fitzgerald family, F. Scott, his wife Zelda and their daughter Scottie, spent more time in Baltimore than any other place, according to University of Maryland professor emeritus Jackson Bryer. The family lived in Towson and …

Smithsonian to Suffer More Severe Sequestration Stoppages

Closing exhibits will not be replaced to save on security costs.

Exhibits that are scheduled to close at the Hirshhorn, National Museum of African Art and Smithsonian will not be replaced due to sequestration, according to a Smithsonian spokeswoman. Linda St. Thomas told the DCist website that “in terms of the security of our visitors, bigger crowds require more security,” but she added, “Every museum is still open every day.” The actual number of exhibits accessible to visitors at open museums are yet another casualty of sequestration. On April 16, Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough warned Congress of the potential effects of sequestration on the area’s museums - gallery closings, reduced educational program offerings and building maintenance issues. The Hirshhorn, National Museum of African Art and…
