Work by high school artists from the 8th District is on display at VisArts in Rockville through May 17.
VisArts in Rockville is hosting an exhibit of work entered in the Congressional Art Competition for High School Students sponsored by U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr.'s office now through May 17. This is the 10th year that Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington personally congratulated the young artists, presenting them with certificates of participation and recognition in the national competition, which began in 1981. An awards ceremony on April 30 at VisArts included competition participants, their families, teachers and competition sponsors and organizers. Rockville Little Theatre's final performances of Lillian Hellman's play are this weekend.
This weekend is your last chance to see Rockville Little Theatre perform this season. The city's community theater group concludes its 2011-2012 season with three performances of the Tony Award-nominated The Little Foxes by Lillian Herman at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Rockville Little Theatre's Web site says this about the play: "The ruthless, moneyed Hubbard family lives in, and poisons, their part of the deep South at the turn of the 20th century in this caustic and engaging tale." Rockville's Wootton High School hosted a "Rock the Vote" concert featuring musical acts Third Eye Blind and Timeflies on Saturday, April 28, 2012. The concert was the culminating event in a weeklong program aimed at increasing students’ political awareness and civic engagement. Last week teachers were given lesson plans designed by the Wootton Student Government Association, concentrating on immigration, health care, the economy, education and energy.

Introduction of an ordinance on the Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home parking lot, a resolution establishing a panel to review the city’s charter and a review of the budget and the city’s Art in Public Places program are on the Rockville City Council’s agenda for Monday. The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting will be broadcast live on Rockville 11. The meeting also will include a resolution designating Douglass A. Barber as the new city clerk. Barber, the former clerk of the City of Hyattsville, was named Rockville City Clerk last month. Today is his first day on the job. A few sequels, one or two reboots, and Johnny Depp in weird costumes. The summer movie season is about to start. MTV is calling 2012 a nerdy movie summer, and also one of the biggest. Says MTV: It's a crowded landscape to be sure; you'll want to spend your hard-earned theatergoing cash wisely if you want to weed out the fantastic, can't-miss movies from the [ugly], must-miss ones. Country music station WMZQ, 98.7 FM, is hosting a Battle of the Bands contest that ends at noon on Friday. To enter, submit a YouTube link to a video of your band to the contest site that is no longer than four minutes. Be sure to read the rules. "Six bands will be chosen to perform on May 3rd or May 17th at Growler's in Gaithersburg and compete for the chance to open the day at WMZQ Fest on June 3rd!" according to the contest's website.
