Rockville's Jared Wood became a national champion at the U.S. National Short Track Speedskating Championships in March in Weston, WI. He won medals in four distances, and finished first in the intermediate men's 1500 meters.

Wood compares speedskating to NASCAR racing because of the high speeds and danger that is involved. Wood, who has autism, said that he has managed to turn his learning disability into an advantage when skating. Though it makes him "more sensitive" it also helps him focus intensely on his sport, he said.
