Tours, 'toons for kids, tea time and an MLK celebration highlight the week ahead

 

Friday: Historic Home Tour

Tour the mansion at Strathmore at 11 a.m. or 12:01 p.m. to explore the history, architecture and stories of the home. The tour is free, but reservations are required.

Saturday: Fine Art Education For Kids

Students in grades 6 through 8 are invited to the Shapiro Music Room to dabble in the art of contemporary cartooning. This class will teach participants technical skills of drawing by focusing on current event subject matter. Michael Cotter, cartoonist and artistic director of Blue Sky Pupper Theatre, will instruct the five hour course.

Sunday: Music in the Mansion

As part of Music in the Mansion, vocalist Julia Nixon will perform. Nixon —a Washington, D.C. resident—  is a winner of the Helen Hayes Award and has performed as Effie in Broadway’s "Dreamgirls."

Monday: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Tribute and Celebration

At the tribute and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the 2011 recipients of The Children of the Dream Award, The Humanitarian Award and The Literary Arts Award will be annoucned. Performances include Men of Valor featuring gospel jazz saxaphonist Brian Lenair, and jazz performer Marcus Johnson.

Tuesday: Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea is served in the Shapiro Music Room at the Strathmore Mansion. Tea is specially made for Strathmore by master tea blender John Harney and is served with a light lunch.

Wednesday: Speciatlty Tea

Scottish Tea will be served in celebration of Robert Burns's birthday. Burns was a national poet of Scotland. Guests will enjoy specialty tea and Scottish-inspired treats while listening to traditional Celtic harp music performed by Jo Morrison. Tea is specially made for Strathmore by master tea blender John Harney.

Jan. 20: Friedrich Kleinhapl & Andreas Woyke

As part of Music in the Mansion, celloist Friedrich Kleinhapl and pianist Andreas Woyke will perform at the Strathmore. This event is co-presented by the Embassy of Austria. Musical selections will include Beethoven and Gulda.
