Testimony Offers a Look at Peary High Then and Now

Alumnus presents photographic comparison of the school's deterioration and renovation

Rockville resident John Seng provided the County Council on Tuesday with graphic testimony—literally—in favor of the proposed sale of the former Robert E. Peary High School to the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy.

Testimony by Seng, a 1975 graduate of Peary High, included a PowerPoint presentation featuring photos — shown in the gallery attached to this article — of the dilapidated Peary building in the years after the high school closed and before the Hebrew academy arrived.

"I think that what we're seeing here is evidence that Montgomery County is not a good custodian of school property once they decide they just don't know what they want to do with a property but they just want to hang on to it," Seng said.

He then showed photos of the building after it was restored by the academy, which invited members of Peary's Class of 1975 back to the building for their 35-year reunion.

Among the photos was a shot of alumni standing in front of a restored mural of Peary's mascot, a husky, "in what looks like a brand spanking new gym that I believe our good friends at the Berman Hebrew Academy should be allowed to purchase from Montgomery County," Seng said.
