The next "Car Free Day" for the area is Saturday, Sept. 22.
Designated by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, "the annual event is organized and promoted by the Council of Governments’ Commuter Connections program to encourage people to use alternative methods of transportation, such as walking, biking, public transportation, or going 'car lite' by carpooling," according to Go Montgomery's website.
"Car Free Day benefits the region through improved air quality, reduced traffic congestion and parking demands, and conservation of energy," Go Montgomery adds.
Residents may pledge to be "car free" or "car lite" on Saturday by signing up at the Council of Governments’ website. Information about carpooling options is available at MCDOT's Commuter Services’ website or by calling 240-773-TRIPS (8747).
Will you go "car free" or "car lite" on Saturday? Will the fact that it's a Saturday make it easier or harder for you to use your car less (or not at all)? Tell us in the comments.

I can't go car free because the closest bus stop is more than 5 miles from my home/
